The Amphitheater was packed this past Thursday as chefs, students, and staff members gathered to watch the Third Annual FCI Hot Dog Eating Contest. Tables, plastic crates, and garbage cans became prime viewing spots as actual seats disappeared almost as rapidly as the Sabrett hot dogs which served as foundations for this year’s Condiment Contest entries.

Sabena Singh, a participant in the staff competition, came armed with a particularly large cheer section, while Dave Arnold chose to intimidate opponents by dressing as a luchador for the event. Arnold proceeded to win the staff contest, only to offer his prize of three days off from work to runner up, David Johnson. Emotions ran high as the results of the Condiment, Beverage, and Fundraising Contests were announced, but everyone was reminded of the real reason for the event when a brief auction took place to benefit the Friends of the French Culinary Institute. The first of five autographed posters went for a generous $1,000, contributing sizably to the year’s $7,500 total.

The main attraction was, of course, the student competition. Spectators watched in amusement and horror as competitors raced to finish their 30-inch hot dogs, which were prepared by Chef Nick Meyer. Culinary student Mina Ayoub looked surprisingly well after taking first place. “I feel good. I could go for a meal right now,” he joked. As his prize is a package of gift certificates to some of New York’s finest restaurants, he can now go for a meal whenever he wants.
